Missed abortion

Responsible for data preparation: Mette Schou Hammerum & Øjvind Lidegaard

1.2.1    Number of women diagnosed with missed abortion and
            spontaneous abortion in Denmark 1998-2005.
Missed abortion: N=36,641. Spontaneous ab: N=46,900

Comments: The total number of miscarriages have been rather stable with about
10,000 events per year. The real number is probablly twice this figure, as about
half of spontaneous abortions are never admitted to hospital and therefore not
recorded.

1.2.2.    Surgical evacuation (%) of women with missed abortion
              in Denmark 1998-2005. N=36,641. n=19,455

Comments: The proportion of women with missed abortion who underwent surgical evacuation
has gradually declined during the eight-year study period. This is probably due to both more
expectant managements, and through the recent years to medical treatment with misoprostole.

1.2.3.    Number of women with missed abortion at different Gynaecological
             departments in Denmark in 2004 (n=4,647) and 2005 (n=4,631)

Comments: The annual number of diagnoses with missed abortion was rather constant during 2004
and 2005 at each department.

1.2.4.    Surgical evacuation (%) in women with missed abortion in 2005
at different Gynaecological departments. Only departments with >10
             diagnoses per year included.
Figures in columns indicate the absolute
number of evacuations at each department.

Comments: The evacuation rate differs more than 10 fold between departments. As no standard has been
set, these variations probably reflects differences in womens preference or in different habits at different
departments. The large variation could also reflect that some women with spontaneous abortion are wrongly
diagnosed with missed abortion.

1.2.5.    Medical treatment (%) of women with missed abortion in Denmark 2005.

The absolute number of women medically treated are indicated in columns.

Commets: The code for medical treatment (BKHD 50) was relatively recently introduced in Denmark. In
departments with routine use of this code about one third of women with missed abortion are medically treated.
